Police to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint This Weekend

Police said the holiday period has a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

Howard County Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the county this weekend.

Police said the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's has a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, with about 25 people per day being killed nationally in impaired-driving crashes.

The checkpoint is one of several that have occurred throughout the year. A checkpoint on Route 1 in North Laurel in August netted five arrests and one in Columbia on MD 175 eastbound in March led to the arrest of two people.

Twenty-five percent of the county's fatal collisions in 2011 were alcohol-related, according to police. In 2011, police arrested 1,391 individuals for driving under the influence.
