Preventing Fires on Thanksgiving

Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services issued the following safety message for residents.

In addition to feasts and family togetherness, Thanksgiving is also the prime time for home fires involving cooking equipment.

According to the United States Fire Administration, an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings occur annually in the United States, resulting in an estimated average of five deaths, 25 injuries and $21 million in property loss each year.

“During Thanksgiving, it can be easy to get overwhelmed or distracted,” said Fire Chief William Goddard in a written statement. “But it’s important that you take preventative measures and make safety your top priority because fires and injuries can definitely put a damper on the holiday.”
