Part of Interstate 70 in Howard County was completely shut down for more than an hour Wednesday morning due to a crash that was fatal, according to officials.

At 9:21 a.m. on Wednesday, two vehicles were involved in the collision on eastbound I-70 before MD Route 32, according to the Coordinated Highways Action Response Team.

One person was trapped and required rescue, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, which reported he was extricated and pronounced deceased at the scene.

All lanes of I-70 in both directions were closed for police investigation.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., the State Highway Administration reported that westbound I-70 had reopened.

Traffic on eastbound I-70 was able to get by on the shoulder after 10:50 a.m. but lanes were closed as officials documented the specifics of the crash, resulting in a "sizable delay," WNEW reported.

By 12:45 p.m., all lanes were open, according to transportation officials.
