The Baltimore City Fire Department hazardous materials team was called to the offices on Wednesday morning.

The Baltimore Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was called Wednesday morning to the Baltimore offices of Rep. Elijah Cummings because of a suspicious substance.

Ian Brennan, a spokesman for the department, said the team was sent to 1010 Park Ave. after the substance was discovered on the front door of the offices.

He said that the hazardous material team is testing the substance, but that the FBI was now leading the investigation.

Cummings issued this statement Wednesday afternoon saying his staff found a "putty-like substance" on the outside of the front door of his Baltimore offices, but it was determined it was not explosive material. He stated his staff will return to their offices once the FBI completes their work.

Cummings was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996, and his district spans from Baltimore to Howard County.
