Police were called to the scene of the collision, on Business Parkway, just after 6 a.m. Thursday according to a statement released by police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn.

Investigators think Copeland was driving her scooter on Roosevelt Boulevard when she pulled into Business Parkway without stopping at the stop sign. Police think she crossed the eastbound lane when a box truck drove into her.

She was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Llewellyn.

Police do not know whether the driver was trying to make a left turn, or if she was going to drive straight through the intersection. Her TaoTao scooter is street legal in Maryland, Llewellyn said in the statement.

The truck driver wasn’t injured, according to police, and investigators do not think he was speeding; police say they probably will not file any charges against the 27-year-old Silver Spring man.

As of 9:30 a.m., Business Parkway remained closed in both directions for the investigation. The road was later reopened after being shut down for a few hours, according to police.
