Rep. Elijah Cummings Projected to Take District 7 Victory

In an unofficial tally reported on the Maryland Board of Elections website, U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings has taken more than 80 percent of votes calculated so far, including early voters and a portion of ballots cast Tuesday.

Cummings, D-Baltimore, the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, defeated Frank Mirabile Jr. in a rematch of their 2010 race in the 7th District.

In an interview at post election party at a lounge in Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium Cummings said that heading back to congress he intends to fight for the progress has made during the last four years.

"I want to make sure that we keep it going. So that we can get people employed and so many people in my district don't have jobs," Cummings said. "So I'm hoping that we'll be able to do some things in regards to the Jobs Act the president has proposed and get that off the table and get it going." 

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Cummings had 114,628 votes. Republican challenger Frank Mirable had 24,507 votes, about 17 percent of votes tabulated so far.

Libertarian candidate Ronald Owens-Bey also had 3,205 of votes, or 2.2 percent.

Cummings serves parts of Baltimore City as well parts of Baltimore and Howard counties.
