Howard County Unemployment Hits 5-Year Low

The county has consistently reported lower unemployment figures than the state.

Howard County's unemployment rate is the lowest in five years and tied for the lowest in the state, according to figures released by the state for November 2013.

The county's 4.5 percent unemployment rate tied it with Montgomery County for the lowest in the state and dropped 0.8 percent from the October number.

"We have worked hard to be fiscally responsible while protecting and enhancing the great schools, safe neighborhoods, beautiful natural resources and community health that residents expect and deserve,” said County Executive Ken Ulman, in a statement. “We’re proving that you can do all that and at the same time, remain business-friendly and promote growth.  I am extremely proud of how Howard County has weathered this economy.”

The state reported an unemployment rate of 6 percent, while the U.S. figure was 6.6 percent for November 2013.

"Every choice we make is about creating jobs and expanding opportunities for more Marylanders," said Governor Martin O'Malley, in a statement.
