President Barack Obama to Visit Parkville Middle School Monday

The Baltimore County middle school and technology center will serve as a backdrop for President Obama to discuss his plans to reform U.S. education.

President Barack Obama and his education secretary are scheduled to visit in Baltimore County at 10 a.m. on Monday to speak about national plans for new investments and reform in education, according to state and national officials.

The Parkville school will be used as an example of excellence in science, technology, engineering and math education. During his visit, President Obama will discuss his 2012 budget priorities for education, said White House and education officials.

Obama is scheduled to be joined on his visit by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

"We chose Parkville Middle School because it is such a good example of the kind of schools that the president feels we need to continue to invest in," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said during a 4:30 p.m. press conference Friday.

Duncan said that Parkville Middle's "hands-on" education in science, technology, engineering and math is precisely the type of curriculum that President Obama wants to support.

"There are many developing nations that are out-educating us," Duncan said. "Improving is one of (President Obama's) top priorities."

Gov. O'Malley's office said it should be no surprise that a Maryland school was chosen for President Obama's discussion.

"For three years in row, Maryland schools have been No. 1 in the nation, and for three years in a row, we've been named the highest achievers on AP test scores," said O'Malley spokesman Shaun Adamec. "Much of what we're doing in Maryland is working, so it makes sense to use us a model for new investments and reform in education."
