Route 1 to Become More Walkable

Howard County starts work on pedestrian project in Elkridge Aug. 22.

Starting Aug. 22, Howard County is working to make Route 1 in Elkridge more pedestrian-friendly through improvements it said should be complete by late September.

New sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, signals for pedestrians and roadway striping are part of the plan.

“As Route 1 continues to experience more activity and development, we are committed to improving pedestrian safety and making the community walkable with the installation of pathways and sidewalks,” said County Executive Ken Ulman in a press release.

The project is listed in the capital budget as the US 1 Corridor Revitalization, "a project to plan, design and implement a series of streetscape, pedestrian, bicycle and public green space improvements on public property.”

To make that a reality, the county said in a press release that it will begin roadway striping on two parts of Washington Boulevard in Elkridge over the next month, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.:
