Sarbanes Announces Funds For Veterans Transportation

The Democrat announced a grant to Maryland from the U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday.

Maryland will receive $2 million in federal funds under an initiative to create easier transportation options for military families and veterans, Rep. John Sarbanes' office announced Wednesday.

The funds are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's $34.6 million Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative, which will set up so-called "one click, one call" centers to allow families to easily access transportation options and other services in suburban and rural areas, where access might be limited.

“Maryland has built a very effective infrastructure for veterans services, and this grant will make sure our veterans are aware of that, and know how to access it," Sarbanes said in a statement.

Sarbanes, a Baltimore County Democrat, also authored the BRAVE Act, which allows veterans whom the Veterans Administration has certified as disabled to carry over that status to Social Security. This week, he is touring veterans organizations in his district, which includes parts of Towson, Reisterstown, Annapolis, Baltimore City and Howard County.
