Ten Years Later: Elkridge Remembers Sept. 11

Schools and fire department honor victims of the 9/11/01 attacks.

From the classroom to the firehouse, Elkridge is paying tribute to the thousands who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Howard County public school officials provided a statement that administrators could read during announcements, said Tricia McCarthy, principal of .

Following the announcement and the Pledge of Allegiance on Friday, Sept. 9, the school had a moment of silence to remember the thousands of people who lost their lives in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania a decade ago.

Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, by flying commercial airliners into the buildings. A fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania, and was thought to be headed toward the Capitol. More than 2,700 people lost their lives in the attacks. 

offered to advise parents and teachers on sharing information with students about the attacks. “We recognize that the majority of our students were not born when the events of Sept. 11 happened,” said McCarthy. "We've asked that caring and compassionate conversations take place on an as-needed basis."

Among those who lost their lives on 9/11, many were first responders trying to rescue people from the wreckage.

The and every other station around Howard County will plant a tree in tribute to the fallen on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

And in Elkridge, the remembrance of Sept. 11 will continue after Sunday.

On Sept. 12,  in Elkridge planned to hold a special prayer service during the opening of school. The prayer service will take place outside near the flag, said Principal Patricia Schratz.

Others participate in the legacy of 9/11/01 in combat. against terrorism overseas. In January 2011, he rolled into Afghanistan with fellow Marines on one of the first U.S. tanks to meet Afghani soil.
