Long Reach Among Newsweek's 'America's Best High Schools'

Newsweek has ranked four of Columbia's high schools -- including Long Reach High School -- among its list of the best high schools in the country.

In its list, Long Reach High School ranked 1,897.

For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Columbia schools' ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above.

The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. The final scores then determined Newsweek’s final rankings.

The latest Newsweek rankings comes as Howard County schools have appeared on other national rankings lists released this spring. All 12 of Howard County high schools appeared on the Washington Post “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list and 11 Howard County high schools ranked in latest U.S. News “Best High Schools” list.
