Deep Run Instructor Named Art Teacher of Year

Maryland Art Education Association selected Erica Murray for Howard County Art Teacher of Year award.

The Maryland Art Education Association named Erica Murray as new elementary Art Teacher of the Year for Howard County, announced the school where she teaches.

The association annually recognizes "outstanding teachers who have demonstrated exemplary teaching and service to their school and district," wrote Deep Run Principal Tricia McCarthy, in the announcement. Murray's award was for the 2011 to 2012 school year.

"Ms. Murray continues to distinguish herself as an up-and-coming art educator and we are so pleased to have her on staff with us," said McCarthy.

Murray participated in the development of Deep Run's "Great Wall of Art," an installation of student-created artwork in the school's foyer this spring.

"Every child in our school created a piece of art," said PTA President Lisa Ditter, who along with PTA volunteers helped place tiles on the wall. "We are so excited to have created a piece of permanent art for our school!"

Ditter credited Murray and fellow art teacher Janet Baird with the idea.

On Oct. 19, Murray will receive her award at the Maryland Art Education Association's fall conference at James Huber High School in Silver Spring.
