Mayfield Woods Student Competing at National Spelling Bee

Jack Nolan, 13, has been busy warming up his spelling skills this week.

The eighth grader will be on ESPN Wednesday as part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He's one of 278 spellers competing for the prize of a college scholarship.

Nolan, who participated in the spelling bee before as a fifth grader, told ABC 2 News he spends an average of 30 minutes a day reviewing word lists that Scripps provides for spellers to study.

Wednesday morning, during the preliminary round, students ages 6 to 15 spelled words like visceral, mozzarella and quisling.

The preliminary round of competition takes place from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Washington, D.C., followed by semifinals and finals on Thursday.
