School Officials Say to Stay Tuned on Sunday

Facilities and fields closed for weekend, officials will make determination Sunday whether to shift plans for Aug. 29 opening.

Howard County Public Schools will let people know early Sunday evening whether the first day of school, scheduled for Aug. 29, will be shifted as a result of Hurricane Irene.

When school officials met at 2 p.m. Friday, they decided to close all school facilities and cancel activities Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, maintenance crews will inspect buildings and grounds following the storm, according to an email sent to parents.

Hurricane Irene could produce 45 mph winds this weekend in Howard County. The hurricane comes days after a on Aug. 23, which also threatened to throw a wrench in the school calendar.

After Tuesday's earthquake, approximately 25 percent of Howard County public school buildings experienced minor damage, said Raymond Brown, the school system's chief operating officer, in a press release. Brown said that necessary work and inspections in the wake of the earthquake would be completed in time for opening.

The first day of school is still planned for Monday, Aug. 29, and officials advised residents to stay tuned Sunday evening in case the schedule changes.

If Howard County is without power on Sunday, officials urged residents to listen to the the Regional Emergency Broadcast Alert System via battery-operated radio. Officials said the latest school information will be on WBAL-AM, WIYY-FM, WMAL-AM, WTOP-AM and WTOP-AM.
