Elkridge, Name Your New Elementary School

The school system wants input from the Elkridge community.

Construction on Ducketts Lane has commenced and now school officials are  in naming the new elementary school before it opens in fall 2013.

What would you name the new school? Tell us in the comments.

These are suggested references, according to the Board of Education's naming policy, which states: "All schools shall be named for geographic terms related to areas of the county served."

  • Streets
  • Water bodies
  • Neighborhoods
  • Landforms
  • Community identity

Ducketts Lane Elementary School

Viaduct Elementary? Why that when it will have NOBODY from the area around the Viaduct attending it? Ducketts Elementary or Ducketts Lane is appropriate. Of course after all of the complaining people where doing over the construction of a new school maybe " Not In My Backyard Elementary is appropriate " ?? LOL

The community around there is called Marble Hill. How about Marble Hill Elementary?
hockeymom June 20, 2012 at 02:23 PM
The townhouse community is named Marble Hill; the single family home community is named Glen Cove Estates. Maybe a combination of the two? Marble Cove, Marble Glen? Just a thought....

Hunt Club Elementary

No one knows the names of the communities unless you say on or off Ducketts Lane. Stick to the basics and call it Ducketts or Ducketts Lane Elementary. A DUCK would be a cool Mascot and make some really cool Spirit Wear. I agree with Dave about VIADUCT.

Hunt Club does have some historical basis, the original Elkridge Hunt Club having originated in Elkridge Landing.

The school site is next to the historic Troy Hill Farm area. The old name of this area was Troy and the old historic building there is the Troy Hill mansion, built by Thomas Dorsey over 200 years ago. The mansion is set to be restored as part of the future Troy Hill Regional Park. How about "Troy Hill Farm Elementary"? I like Marble Hill and also Troy Hill Farm Elementary or Troy Hill Elementary.

@Dave, I'm *totally* onboard with "NIMBY", but if that's a no-go I'd prefer something like "Ryan Homes Elementary" with the PBS-like "This school brought to you by the letters F, A, I and L. Major funding (almost!) provided by the idiots that moved to Howard County in the last 10 years thinking it was better than the rest of Maryland. Additional funding provided by the residents of Ducketts Lane that have lost all their remaining open space so that Jessup's children don't have to go to school in their own neighborhoods, and by the automobile parts association of America who thank Howard County for spending millions to rebuild Ducketts Lane and Bauman Drive in 2010 so it could be dug up and never again repaired for a water main in 2011, a new school in 2012 and a new fire house in 2013.". Does anyone honestly care what it's called? it's a school that is being built in the wrong place for the wrong people for the wrong reasons, I seriously doubt anyone that's affected really gives a hoot what the unofficial name or mascot happens to be.

"Idiots that moved to Howard County in the last 10 years" and we are supposed to take any of your other comments seriously? Throwing out general insults like that, is probably not going to get your voice heard...
Jack June 21, 2012 at 05:14 PM
"Idiots" is a little harsh even if the hcpss treats them as such. I refer to those trying to buy into the illusion of Howard county's "great" schools as blind, willing followers of deception. Give the new school a meaningful name, name it after the new superintendent, call it "Scraps" and call the one at Oxford Square "Warehouse 20"
AJ June 21, 2012 at 11:28 PM
"Blind" or "Blinded" is definitely a better characterization...it would have been hard for people who moved here in the last 5 to10 years to picture things going downhill this rapidly...I for one never thought I'd be worrying about a Casino in my backyard...I think it is also an indictment on the state of school systems in Maryland, where is one to go, especially in this job market....

How about "The Last Resort School".... by Howard County School System or Liparini's egg nest!
Paul D June 23, 2012 at 01:40 AM
William Donald Schaefer Elementary!!!!! ...my second vote is for some variation of Troy Hill
djp952 June 23, 2012 at 05:53 AM
Yes, you're all right, that was the incorrect wording. Rants have a tendency to contain those. I like "blind" better, but still think a stronger inflection, perhaps "ignorant" is still appropriate. Remember, I'm including myself in this category of individuals regardless of what I refer to it as. I'm not necessarily trying to get any kind of point across, that ship sailed long ago and will not be turning back, I'm just so very angry and frustrated with everything that goes on around here that the only way I can seem to cope at all is to vent with my keyboard from time to time. I have no aspirations to ever be taken seriously, and again it wasn't a "general insult", it was a very directed insult to people like myself that moved here without taking the time to review the Master Plan and Zoning rulings thinking that the community wouldn't turn into something so undesirable and so very "Maryland" so quickly. I apologize for my virtual rant, but not for my feelings about this school project or how neglected, insulted and damaged this part of the world has become. I still think "Ryan Homes Elementary" is an accurate name for it, and the Realtor "R" would be a perfect logo. This school would not have been necessary without the ignorance, greediness and lack of foresight of our beloved Howard County officials. I am still naive enough to believe that these people are not corrupt or "on the take" and are just ... idiots ... but I'm really starting to wonder :-)
Mr. Drew June 23, 2012 at 12:27 PM
"Boulevard of Dreams Elementary" for Route 1. "The Elementary School at Troy Hill", to get that Columbia flair. :-)
Jack June 23, 2012 at 04:10 PM
I believe the way the government conducts itself perpetuates ignorance. Your statement "I'm not necessarily trying to get any kind of point across, that ship sailed long ago and will not be turning back" is what a lot of people think without realizing the process is ongoing. One of the first things I ever said which seemed to infuriate the hcpss was "if it happens to my children it happens to yours". Point being, what is being done to the people of Elkridge will continue and will be done to all of us. I can not accept such an outcome for my children or yours so I continue to speak out and encourage others to do so. The affect is not instant nor has it greatly altered the view of our politicians but I assure you it is being felt. Inclusion of the people is something our government is very uncomfortable with, much easier for them to rule over ignorance. G

The Acadamy at Troy Hill.

We should save Troy Hill Farm for the new High School to be built adjacent to the park!! (if only . . .)
Doug K June 25, 2012 at 03:49 PM
Robert -- I think you need a sarcasm button . . . ;-) Otherwise people would be worried that you can't spell . . .

Patapsco River Elementary School. So much history with the river.
Doug K June 26, 2012 at 03:42 AM
Patapsco River would be nice -- but there is already a Patapsco Middle School in Howard County as well as a Patapsco Elementary Middle School in Baltimore City. The confusion by adding this one as Patapsco River Elementary probably wouldn't be worth it.
Lori June 26, 2012 at 02:23 PM
"ABF Elementary" following the criteria above that "All schools shall be named for geographic terms". That is what the children will be seeing and hearing when in the classroom or outside at recess.

There is another community that borders the property called Glen Cove Estates. What about Glen Cove Elementary School?
