Members of the Howard Lions boys lacrosse team roared their way into the state championship game but South River Seahawks swooped in to claim the class 4A/3A title.

Leading up to Tuesday's game, the Lions had played an undefeated season.

The final score in the matchup for the state title was 9-6, with the Seahawks (17-2) putting up an unrelenting defense that threw the Lions (18-1) off their game, The Washington Post reported.

There was a "huge crowd" at UMBC to watch the 8 p.m. game, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).

"I’ve never been a part of something my entire four years at Howard that has had so much support," Lions captain Peter Emery, a senior at Howard, told The Baltimore Sun.

For the Lions, the season was still a winning one. According to The Baltimore Sun, Howard clinched the regional title for the first time in 23 years.

MPSSAA reports this was the third state title for the Seahawks.
