Heat Advisory Through July 18 for Howard County

Wednesday temperatures in Maryland could feel like 105 degrees.

Howard County’s Health Department has issued a heat advisory effective Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Temperatures Tuesday were 10 to 15 degrees hotter than normal, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Wednesday may feel like 105 degrees in the Baltimore-Washington area, reports NWS. According to the forecast, actual temperatures in Elkridge, Ellicott City, Columbia and Savage will be approximately 98 degrees.

Not only will it be hot but also the air will be a bit more difficult to breathe.

The Maryland Department of the Environment issued a "code orange" air quality alert for Wednesday. As a result of increased ozone levels, sensitive groups—including older adults, infants and people with lung, heart or asthma conditions—should avoid the outdoors.

Tips for handling the heat, courtesy of the Howard County Health Department:

  • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Drink fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Don’t leave animals or children in cars.

Be aware of the symptoms of heat related illness: extreme weakness, muscle cramps, nausea, headache, possible vomiting or fainting, dry red skin, convulsions, disorientation, delirium and coma.

Call 911 in case of an emergency.
