Howard County Fair and Other Happenings This Weekend
Nature night in Columbia, fair in West Friendship and other events are on tap for families in greater Elkridge.
- When: 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3
Where: in Columbia
Why Go: Experience the wonders of space in the comfort of Robinson Nature Center’s Nature Sphere, a digital planetarium and dome-style movie theater. Join us as we explore our universe-from planets, to constellations, to black holes. This program is for adults and children over the age of 5. Children must be accompanied by an adult. It is recommended you pre-register by calling 410-313-0400 to secure your seat.
Pricing: $6
- When: 6–8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3; and 3–5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4
Where: in Columbia
Why Go: HCC’s Arts Collective’s improv group is adding its first off-shoot improv group of teen actors ages 14-18 to perform during varios shows through the 2012-2013 season. Audition appointments required.

Why Go: Beginner fencing classes are offered for ages 8 to 80.
Pricing: $20; family discounts available.
- Howard County Fair
When: Aug. 4–11; hours vary, so see the full schedule.
Where: Howard County Fairgrounds (2210 Fairground Rd.) in West Friendship
Why Go: Livestock exhibits, carnival rides and games, musical entertainment, educational demonstrations and a petting zoo. The Howard County Fair hosts daily horse shows, pony rides, tractor pulls, and livestock competitions. Popular contests include the Pretty Baby Contest, Talent Show and Cow Milking Contest.
Pricing: $5 per person, ages 10 and up; children under 10 years old admitted FREE; $2 for seniors.
