Memorial Day Forecast: Hot and Humid

Summer weather is here. At least for the weekend.

Forget the solstice. This year, Memorial Day is the true harbinger of summer.

Beginning Friday, and through Memorial Day, temperatures will steadily rise, peaking at about 91 on Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

That's thanks, in part, to a high-pressure system moving over the region Friday, according to Calvin Meadows at the NWS.

“High pressure means denser air settling over the area,” he said, bringing winds from the south/southeast.

Think sunny, hot, and muggy.

Temperatures should reach the low 80s Friday, approach 90 on Saturday and Sunday and break through to the low 90s on Memorial Day, according to Meadows.

Expect foggy, cloudy evenings with temperatures in the low 60s on Friday night and the high 60s to low 70s the rest of the weekend until a "cold" front swoops in Tuesday, bringing temperatures back down to the 80s and maybe thunderstorms, according to Meadows.

In stop-and-go traffic, climbing hills, or—in older cars—regular driving, vehicles may start to overheat. If the heat gauge starts inching into the danger zone, turn the air conditioner off and the heat on, according to the guys at Car Talk.

If you hit the "red zone," pull over and get professional assistance. And bring some extra coolant along just in case.

Other summer driving tips from Car Talk:

  • Bring extra oil
  • Take a full-sized spare tire
  • Print out a map
  • Bring duct tape

But everyone should always have a roll of duct tape handy, right?
