Columbia Residential burglary A resident of the 7500 block of Broken Staff reported her Apple MacBook was stolen on April 26 between 1 and 5:30 p.m. According to police, there was no sign of forced entry. Police say a resident of the 5400 block of Columbia Road lost his keys sometime between April 27 and May 2. His keychain had his address and phone number on it. On May 2, the resident found his keys on the floor of his home, just inside the front door. He reported several items missing, including cameras, purses, jewelry and a laptop. The alarm was sounding when a resident returned home to the 10900 block of Trotting Ridge Way on May 6 at about 5:30 p.m., according to police. A member of a cross-country drug syndicate was using narcotics money to pay rent on an apartment in Elkridge that served as a gathering place for illicit activities, according to a complaint filed by the IRS. Jared Weinberg, 28, faces charges in a Pennsylvania court for filing false tax returns and money laundering. He is one of several people named - including his father - in connection with the drug ring that saw cocaine being trafficked from California to Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to investigators. According to the affidavit, Weinberg rented an apartment at 6241 Greenfield Road from July 2009 to May 2010. Federal authorities say the gang members have been operating in Howard County for three years.
Nearly 20 alleged members of the Howard County Bloods gang were indicted Wednesday on federal racketeering charges after 25 search warrants were executed across the county, including in Elkridge, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland. Michael McKenny pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Howard County Circuit Court.
A Howard County man pleaded guilty Tuesday to secretly videotaping two women inside their Ellicott City condominium and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Police arrested Columbia resident Michael Stephen McKenny in October of 2012 after investigating a hidden camera found inside a Montgomery Run Road condo in Ellicott City. The investigation began in September when a 29-year-old Ellicott City woman told police she found a hidden camera in her bedroom that was focused on her bathroom. According to charging documents, the camera, which began recording when it detected movement, secretly recorded the 29-year-old and a 30-year-old roommate in their bedrooms and bathrooms. On Tuesday, Howard County police and government officials will honor seven police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony in Ellicott City, in conjunction with National Police Week, will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Howard County Police Headquarters Memorial Courtyard and Garden, 3410 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City. Elkridge Commercial burglary Someone stole copper piping from a Ryan Homes construction site on the 6100 block of South Meyer Drive sometime between April 26 and April 3, according to police. There were no signs of forced entry. Police say someone threw a rock through a window at Crazy Ray’s, on the 8100 block of Washington Boulevard on May 3 at about 11:30 p.m. Someone entered the business, according to police, but nothing was reported stolen. Police say the woman had just moved to the area.
Howard County Police are asking for help after a woman was found shot to death in a car in Columbia Saturday, according to a statement released by police. Someone called police at about 9 a.m. after seeing a woman who “appeared to be injured” in a car on the 9600 block of Basket Ring Road, according to police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn. When police arrived, they found Deborah Castellano, 47, dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a Toyota Corolla parked in parking lot, according to Llewellyn. Police say they think Castellano had recently moved to the area and was living in the apartment building near where she was shot. Elkridge Burglary Someone broke into a home on the 5900 block of Old Washington Blvd. late the night of April 25 or early the next morning, according to police. The burglar forced open a back door and stole two bags that were hanging on the wall, within arms reach of the door. One of the bags was a purse; the other, the resident’s lunch. Ellicott City Burglary A resident returned home to the 8900 block of Town and Country on April 19 to find the front door had been unlocked, according to police. There were no signs of forced entry, but jewelry and sunglasses were reported stolen.
