The store in Columbia will close on April 7.
A big banner was draped over the windows in front of the Blockbuster video store on Dobbin Road in Columbia on Friday afternoon. It read "Store Closing." The location will officially close on April 7, according to sign posted inside the store, making it the last Blockbuster in Howard County to close. The last Ellicott City Blockbuster closed earlier this year. Inside the store on Friday, a customer who was returning rentals told one of the employees she thought the store was never going to close because it was so busy and the employee responded, "I guess they just picked us." Police said a Burtonsville man exposed himself twice inside the Mall in Columbia.
Howard County police said they arrested and charged a Burtonsville man in two reported incidents of indecent exposure at the Mall in Columbia after a mall employee spotted the man exposing himself in the food court on Wednesday night. Police said the mall employee saw the man, identified as Steven Michael Lerer, 49, of Burtonsville, standing near the food court with a jacket covering his genital area. When the man turned, the employee saw the man fondling himself and exposing his genitals, said police. The employee reported the man to mall security, who held him until police arrived, police said. James LeMon said the school is continuing to improve safety procedures at the school after an alleged rape occurred inside the school on Monday.
The principal of Wilde Lake High School wrote in his second letter to parents in as many days that the school is evaluating safety procedures in the wake of an alleged rape reported at the school on Monday. "We will maintain a safe and orderly environment for all students at Wilde Lake High School with our continued vigilance and alertness," wrote Principal James LeMon. Police provided a more detailed outline in court documents of what they said happened at Wilde Lake High School earlier this week.
The 14-year-old female who accused a fellow student of raping her at Wilde Lake High School told police the incident happened Monday inside a choir room, according to the statement of probable cause filed in court documents. Police said that the school provided evidence that shows the girl and DeShawn Rasheed Jones, 17, entering and leaving the choir room, as well as the 14-year-old taking one of her friends to the restroom after it happened, according to the documents. Jones is currently being held on $500,000 bond, according to court officials. He is being charged as an adult with second-degree rape, second-degree assault and false imprisonment. A video shows a woman, identified as Everett, beating a man at a group home for disabled individuals in Columbia.
Howard County police have arrested a Randallstown woman whom they say is shown in a YouTube video beating and spitting in the face of an intellectually disabled man at a Columbia group home where she works. Donna Everett, 57, was arrested by police after the group home's owner, Emerge Inc., identified her in the video. She was working as a house manager, according to police. The home is located in the 6500 block of Quiliting Way in Columbia. In the video, a woman can be seen swinging both of her fists down on the sitting man's head, after bending over and spitting in his face. Heavy rainfall overnight on Wednesday soaked Howard County.
A rain storm that poured down on the county overnight on Wednesday caused flooding, road closures and downed trees. The storm swept through Maryland leaving approximately two inches of rainfall in an 18-hour period, according to National Weather Service (NWS) data. On Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, the Patapsco River rose so high it nearly reached the bridge that leads into Catonsville. Officials closed Main Street in the morning due to flooding and some businesses were dealing with the after-effects. Police said a man believed to be involved in a string of Ellicott City cat burglaries was arrested after attempting to hide in a dumpster on Tamar Drive in Columbia.
Police said a man suspected in a string of Ellicott City cat burglaries was arrested this week hiding in a dumpster on Tamar Drive in Columbia as he attempted to flee the scene of a burglary. Cornelius Antonio McRae, 23, of Baltimore, was charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft and assault, police said. Police said they spotted McRae near the 8100 block of Tamar Drive on Jan. 6, near the site of a burglary that had just been committed. Police said they were in the area after they had located an unoccupied stolen 2013 silver Honda Pilot, which they determined McRae had been driving. The two suspects wanted in connection with a string of daytime door kick-in burglaries throughout Howard County were recently arrested in Bay County, Florida. Jopseh Leo Baumgarten and Dianna Lynn Marketti have been wanted by the Howard County Sheriff’s Office since they skipped a bail hearing on Nov. 15. Marketti was arrested on an outstanding warrant after police responded to a verbal altercation between her and Baumgarten on Christmas, according to Springfield, FL Police. That day, Baumgarten fled the scene, said Springfield police, but he was later picked up on an outstanding warrant on Jan. 3 and charged with resisting an officer and providing a false name. The man pictured stole the package about 12 minutes after UPS dropped it off, according to police.
A Columbia resident caught a possible burglar on camera as the man casually pulled into the resident's driveway and loaded a package from the doorstep into his car, according to police. Dan Dorn, the resident, said it took the man only about 60 seconds to take the package, which had arrived about 12 minutes earlier, according to WJLA. Howard County police are now investigating the incident. A police spokesperson said police have not received any other reports of packages stolen from doorsteps this holiday season.
