Food on the 15th, CA, Women's Giving Circle Aiding Sandy Victims

Local organizations are hosting a food, clothing and water drive on Saturday.

  Here in Howard County, Superstorm Sandy knocked out power, downed trees, caused minor flooding, but luckily, didn't cause the widespread coastal devastation residents of New York and New Jersey face. This weekend three local organizations are teaming up to collect donations for our neighbors to the North. Food on the 15th, Columbia Association and the Young Women's Giving Circle of Howard County wil be collecting a wide range of items from noon to 3 p.m. at Clarksville Middle School, 6535 Trotter Road, Clarksville, on Saturday. The donations will then be loaded into a truck by CA's Open Space Division staff and Titan Maintenance and brought to the Civil Air Patrol, Maryland Wing in Glen Burnie—who will bring it to those in need. 12 Days of Volunteering in Greater Elkridge

Day 6: Give someone a lift—out of poverty—by donating your old car. Through the Vehicles For Change program, which serves low-income families, 75% of participants get a better job within 12 months of receiving transportation.

"We get 40-45 cars a day in the last two weeks of the year," said Marty Schwartz, president of Vehicles For Change (5230 Washington Blvd.), one of dozens of local charities vying for vehicle donations as the Dec. 31 tax deadline approaches. Soliciting vehicle donations has evolved into a major source of funding for nonprofits of many stripes, from public radio stations to Purple Heart. Usually, these organizations immediately auction cars they receive for whatever price the wholesale market will command. Vehicles For Change, on the other hand, services donated cars and awards them at below-market prices to low-income families that lack basic transportation.
