Howard County Police confronted questions from the public on a planned sobriety checkpoint this weekend.
A routine press release from the Howard County Police Department on an upcoming sobriety checkpoint this weekend generated 89 shares, 64 “likes” and more than 25 comments on Facebook. What was all the fuss about? Reactions to the Tuesday post from the department ranged from worries about drinking and driving, texting and driving, to questioning why the police department had to inform the public prior to a sobriety checkpoint --- doesn’t that defeat the purpose? “I think it's stupid that the police [department] has to tell the public these things,” wrote Robin Maldonado-Shaw on the Howard County Police Department Facebook page. “You drink and drive you should go to jail! I know plenty of people who have just been slapped on the wrist yet …

Police said the holiday period has a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
Howard County Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the county this weekend. Police said the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's has a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, with about 25 people per day being killed nationally in impaired-driving crashes. The checkpoint is one of several that have occurred throughout the year. A checkpoint on Route 1 in North Laurel in August netted five arrests and one in Columbia on MD 175 eastbound in March led to the arrest of two people. Twenty-five percent of the county's fatal collisions in 2011 were alcohol-related, according to police. In 2011, police arrested 1,391 individuals for driving under the influence. The Maryland State police said they will be out in force through the July 4th holiday.

A news release said the additional troopers will specifically work to get drunk drivers off the road before they injure or kill other people. Special patrols will also be targeting speeding and aggressive drivers. State Police commanders have reviewed crash data for their area and are deploying these additional patrols in the …

Police aim to reduce drunk driving on St. Patrick's Day.
Going out for St. Patrick's Day? So are police. The Howard County Police Department issued a statement earlier this week that it would be conducting a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the county over the weekend. Signs and lights will surround the checkpoint, where officers in marked and unmarked vehicles will evaluate drivers for use of alcohol, seatbelts and child safety seats. Approximately one in three fatalities on St. Patrick's Day is due to drunk driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Every 51 minutes, drunk driving claimed a life in 2010, according to the NHTSA. Good Numbers to Drunk Dial AAA offers a free program called "tow to go" in which it provides people with a free ride home and a …

The Howard County Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the county this week.
Howard County police are giving drivers fair warning: Drive sober or face the consequences. Police will be watching for drunk drivers especially closely this week with a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location. On average, five people are killed in impaired-driving crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, according to Howard County police. On Dec. 10 of last year, a 22-year-old Elkridge man died when his car swerved off Montgomery Road in Ellicott City and crashed into a house, igniting his car and setting the house on fire. The victim's blood-alcohol level was .20, according to the report -- more than twice the legal driving alcohol limit of .08 -- and he was not wearing a seat belt. And on Dec. 23, 26-year-old Kenneth …
