Report: Board Chooses Name for New Elkridge Elementary School

The board did not accept the recommendation of the naming committee.

The Board of Education voted this week to name the new elementary school in Elkridge “Ducketts Lane Elementary” after the street that the school is on, Howard County Times reported. Do you like the new name? Tell us in comments. Board member Sandra French made the motion Thursday to approve the name. Citing the difficulty of finding Ducketts Lane Road, she said, “I think we need a school name as a designation,” according to the Times.  Last summer, Patch asked readers what they wanted to name the school. More than 20 names were suggested – Ducketts Lane Elementary was readers’ top pick, but they also suggested Troy Hill Farm Elementary, Marble Hill Elementary and Viaduct Elementary, for the nearby Thomas Viaduct.  A naming committee, …

For those of you commenting on the name of the school and haven't seen the actual school yet, I encourage you to drive by the new site on Ducketts Lane. When you do, you will notice the enormity of the building. The drawing on this post does not do it justice. You have to see it to believe it. There will be very little land for the children to play on. All you see is one massive 2+ story building…   more ›

There is definitely something seriously wrong with the people at the hcpss and the BOE. We have a BOE with the conscience of a dog who is in charge of virtually nothing beyond appeasing the wealthy and those who seek profit from the backs of the citizens. We have a grossly overpaid superintendent who has no leadership ability and no idea what is going on who heads a department of some of the most…   more ›

Ducketts School Naming Committee Concerns Board of Education Member

Board member noted nobody from Elkridge Elementary School was on 13-member committee, but now the PTA president is involved.

Before the elementary school on Ducketts Lane opens in fall 2013, it needs a name, and the deadline for the Board of Education to approve one is Dec. 4. At a school board meeting last week, board member Brian Meshkin said he was "surprised" that nobody from Elkridge Elementary School stepped forward to help with the naming of the school. The committee includes 13 members. "This new school is really providing relief to the students and the families in Elkridge and will have a big influence on Elkridge Elementary School, yet there is nobody from Elkridge Elementary or the PTA ... or even GECA [Greater Elkridge Community Association] represented," said Meshkin. "I was surprised not to see any names" on the committee from Elkridge. Because of …

School Redistricting Prompts Questions about Fracturing Neighborhoods

Parents at one Elkridge elementary school wanted answers about plans to take effect next year.

Parents were concerned about neighborhoods being fractured and losing socioeconomic diversity during a meeting Monday night at Deep Run about school redistricting scenarios for 2013. The discussion came as school officials attempt to alleviate overcrowding in the northeastern part of Howard County and shuffle students so they can fill a brand-new elementary school on Ducketts Lane opening in fall 2013. The two redistricting plans that have been proposed would shift students on Mayfield Avenue out of their current school, which is Deep Run Elementary. "If I'm reading the map correctly, I live on Mayfield Avenue, so either way my children would have to move to Waterloo or Bellows Spring?" asked one mother, among the 30 parents who attended …

The area is not bad. Sure there is some problems but not anything like or even close to Baltimore. Even the worse parts of Howard County is better then 90% of all of the United States. What I would tell anyone is if you don't like it here leave. As far as the word Diverse goes it is what Deep Run Elementary prides its self on as well as the surrounding area. Diverse does not mean crime it does …   more ›
