Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department Remembers September 11

The fire department stood at attention on Old Washington Road on Sunday for the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Members of the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department stood outside the firehouse on Old Washington Road on Sunday to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks 10 years before. "At 8:30 a.m., the apparatus [fire trucks] rolled out," said Jay Mathews, who participated in the 9/11 ceremony in Elkridge as part of the honor guard. Firefighters listened to the 9/11 ceremony that was simulcast from the Howard County Public Safety Training Center in Marriottsville from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with heads bowed. "A pear tree was found in the smoldering rubble of the World Trade Center," said the broadcast. Elkridge Marine Among First Tanks in Afghanistan

Tank gunner Sgt. Todd Cross said: "We just focus on the mission, taking care of each other and coming back home."

When Sgt. Todd Cross of Elkridge, rolled into Afghanistan on a tank, he made history. His crew—of the Delta company, 1st tank battalion, 2nd Marine division—arrived in January 2011 on the first U.S. tanks ever to enter Afghanistan territory. Here's what Cross, who grew up near Route 1 and Waterloo Road, had to say about his experience overseas. What do you do over there? I'm on the tank crew. I’m a gunner, so I operate all the weapons on the tank, but I work for the company command...so I'm in charge of two tanks and their crews. We’re here with 100 marines.  And a tank crew does...?
