The site will remain your resource for Elkridge news, as editor moves to Havre de Grace Patch.
It’s been almost two years since Elkridge Patch came on the scene in Howard County and with mixed emotions, your initial editor is moving on. As of Columbus Day—Monday, Oct. 8—I’ll be heading over to Havre de Grace Patch as editor there and contributor on Aberdeen Patch too. Elkridge Patch will be under the oversight of Associate Regional Editor Lisa Rossi, who will act as administrator as of Oct. 8. You can reach her at lisa.rossi@patch.com. To the community of Elkridge, I can't tell you how much I will miss you. Since Oct. 29, 2010, when Elkridge Patch went online with the click of a button from Daniels Restaurant, my life completely changed as I lived and breathed Elkridge. From the McDonald’s sign that the Greater Elkridge Community …

The property went to auction in July, and now cars are being offered for sale in the parking lot.
Approximately 20 cars sit on an empty lot on Route 1 by the former Buttermilk Hill Tavern, and two men stationed in a van said the cars were for sale. However, it remains unclear who was the winning bidder when the tavern property at 6100 Washington Blvd. was offered at auction in July or whether that deal even closed. The property, which is zoned for restaurant/commercial development, sold at auction in July with a winning bid of $500,000. However, the bidder did not wish to be identified at the auction, and the auctioneer declined to comment on Sept. 28 on whether the deal went through after cars started rolling onto the lot in front of the tavern. As of Oct. 1, the property had not changed hands, according to the Maryland Department of …

Runway work, ongoing since June, culminates in 60-day closure starting Aug. 20.
Starting Monday, Elkridge can expect more planes overhead. One of the two major thoroughfares for commercial planes at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI) will be closed for 60 days starting Monday, Aug. 20, for reconstructive work around the runway, according to a statement from the airport. With Runway 10-28 closed, air traffic patterns may change, said Jonathan Dean, a spokesman for BWI. He said Elkridge was in the area impacted by the shift. “In the northwest regions, like Elkridge and Catonsville, residents in those communities will see an increase in operations compared to usual conditions,” said Dean. According to Dean, 70 percent of traffic will be going over Elkridge and communities northwest of the…

The hair salon opened in August 2011 and closed in July 2012.
Less than a year after opening, Salon Allure has closed. According to court records, the hair salon owed more than $20,000 in payments to the owner of Meadowridge Business Park where it was located on Route 1 at Business Parkway. Manekin LLC, the landlord, filed a complaint on June 26 with the Howard County District Court, which ruled July 6 that the salon owed Manekin $20,960.18. A representative from Manekin who was inside the salon on July 31 told Patch the business had closed and she did not know when. A stylist who has since relocated sent cards to clients postmarked July 9 stating that "d[ue] to the economy, Salon Allure had to close their doors." Salon Allure opened in late August 2011. At the time, the owner did not wish to be …

The repaving of one of the airport’s runways results in higher concentration of air traffic overhead.
Hearing more airplanes than you used to in Elkridge? BWI officials say not to be alarmed. The airport has been working on its runways since June and shifted some flights over Elkridge as a result, according to Alan Peljovich, manager for the BWI's runway safety program. By 2015, all of BWI’s runways must be up to snuff with the Federal Aviation Administration’s safety standards to remain eligible for federal funding, said Peljovich. Currently, he said, none of the runways are in compliance. “From mid-August to October, [BWI] will close one runway,” said Peljovich, in a recent talk with the Greater Elkridge Community Association. “You will either be getting all of the departures on a given day over you or all of the arrivals over you on a…

Citizen comments were the impetus, according to State Highway Administration.
In a response to citizen comments, plans to tweak a sign on I-95 south are underway, according to an official from the State Highway Administration (SHA). "We are making a slight alteration," said David Buck, spokesman for SHA, referencing the exit sign for Route 100 east. The sign bears the words "Elkridge" and "Maryland Live Casino" with the exit number 43A. Elkridge Patch users said that in its current form, the sign on I-95 south was "misleading" and "confusing," sending traffic to Elkridge when the casino is in Hanover. In an unscientific Patch poll about the sign, 76 percent of people said they disliked the sign. Stating that "citizen comments" were behind the change, Buck told Patch the SHA plans to make minor modifications. "The …

"It makes sense," said David Buck, spokesman for State Highway Administration.
A new southbound I-95 sign placed prior to Route 100 that juxtaposes "Elkridge" and "Maryland Live Casino" has been attracting attention among Elkridge Patch readers. Some bemoaned the listing of a private business on a State Highway Administration sign. "The state should not be advertising private businesses on highway signs," one user wrote. "If the casino gets the state to make them a sign, then I say Cindy's Soft Serve should get equal treatment." Another user added, "Cindy's is Elkridge...the casino is not." Some said the sign should identify the casino as being in Hanover, where it is located, in Anne Arundel County. David Buck, the State Highway Administration's spokesman, told Patch that the current signage "makes sense," and here…

Retailer in former Loehmann's location has wholesale warehouse north on Route 1.
The mattress warehouse advertised on the old Loehmann's storefront in Gateway Overlook contains more than bedtime items. Couches, tables, screens, mirrors and loveseats line the floor, inside walls that still bear Loehmann's lettering. Staff said that the furniture outlet, which gets goods from the Global Trading wholesale warehouse on San Tomas Drive in Elkridge, is hoping to become a permanent fixture in the shopping center. Currently, it is leasing the space and competing with at least two other bidders for a long-term spot, according to the mattress warehouse staff. Since opening on Saturday, June 16, employees said the store has had limited traffic but plans to run a sale this weekend with signage announcing its opening. Have you …
