$100,000 in Estimated Damage For Elkridge Business Fire

The fire broke out just after 11 a.m. Friday.

Howard County fire officials said Friday afternoon that a mid-morning fire at Advance Polybag Incorporated in Elkridge that caused about 40 workers to evacuate the building has caused an estimated $100,000 in damage. Firefighters arrived at the building on the 6900 block of San Tomas Road in Elkridge just after 11:20 a.m., to find the three-story building with “heavy dark smoke pouring from the third floor," officials said. The cause may have been roofing with some metal material that caught fire, according to the fire department. The fire has been ruled accidental, officials said. Elkridge Family Looks for Temporary Home After Fire

It will take nearly a year to rebuild the Paradise Avenue home after a Feb. 18 electrical fire destroyed much of the house.

A week after a fire swept through their Elkridge home, the Graff family—including Sharon, Michael, their son Joshua and two young dogs—are looking for a place to go.  “My family doesn’t need money or clothes. But we do need a place to live and are having a hard time finding it,” wrote Sharon Graff in an email to Patch.  On Friday, Feb. 17, she was sleeping when her husband woke her to tell her there was a fire. "He sent me out and sent the dogs out behind me," she said. Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services ruled the fire accidental, according to Jackie Cutler, spokeswoman for the department. A crimped extension cord in the basement caused the electrical fire, according to Graff. She said a forensic engineer determined …

House Fire Displaces Elkridge Family

There were no injuries reported, said officials.

A fire that broke out around midnight Saturday displaced an Elkridge family living on Paradise Avenue. At approximately 12 a.m. on Feb. 18, a neighbor called 911 to report a fire on the 5700 block of Paradise Avenue in Elkridge, said Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS). The owners of the home, who evacuated before firefighters arrived, also called to report the fire when they got outside, said officials. The fire was confined to the basement, said HCDFRS, and Howard and Baltimore county crews brought it under control within 30 minutes. Units cleared the scene at 4:30 a.m., according to officials. There was "significant smoke damage" on the first floor, said HCDFRS. A team was on scene Saturday morning at …

Fire Across from Elkridge Flea Market

The blaze took firefighters 45 minutes to bring under control, said officials.

Firefighters from three counties were needed to bring a blaze under control across from the US 1 Flea Market in Elkridge Wednesday night, said officials. No one was injured, according to initial reports. At 10:15 p.m., a person passing by the flea market called 9-1-1 to report a fire across the street, said Battalion Chief Eric Proctor. The fire was on 7471 Washington Blvd., at Central Transport, a trucking facility. When firefighters arrived, they found a trailer ablaze with flames that had spread to a nearby building, said Proctor. Approximately 30 employees who had been working in the building escaped before rescue teams got to the scene, according to a press release issued on Thursday. Baltimore and Anne Arundel firefighters were …
