Howard County police say an 86-year-old Elkridge man is out more than $150,000 because he thought he’d won the Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes. According to a statement, the man had been receiving letters and phone calls from people who said they represented Publisher’s Clearing House, attorneys and representatives of the IRS. The man told police that he had received a check for his $1.6 million prize, but he was told that in order to cash it, he needed an “activation code,” which he could get once he paid taxes on the winnings. Police say the man wired $151,000 to cover the taxes, but was not able to cash the $1.6 million prize. Elkridge Cemetery burglary Someone pried open a shed at Holy Trinity Russian Cemetery in the 6400 block of Elibank Drive and stole kitchen and outdoor catering items sometime between May 19 to the 20. Attempts to access two other sheds were unsuccessful. Police reported there were no signs of forced entry at the main gate. Attempted residential burglary A man tried to gain entry to a residence in the 7100 block of Duckett's Lane through an unlocked door, but the homeowner's dog began to bark and lunged at the man causing him to flee in an unknown direction around 5:20 p.m. on May 21. Elkridge Robbery A man coming from a check cashing business was being driven by an acquaintance when he was dropped off at his home. Shortly after, another vehicle pulled up and a passenger got out. The passenger and driver of the car assaulted the man and took his wallet, cell phone and keys, then drove off. The incident occurred in the 6700 block of Pirch Way around 5 p.m. on May 15. North Laurel Robbery Two men approached a woman. One displayed a gun and demanded the woman's vehicle. The woman told the men the vehicle was equipped with a Lo-Jack tracking device and then the men demanded her wallet and cell phone, which she gave them. There were no signs of forced entry. Elkridge Burglary Someone broke into a home on the 5900 block of Old Washington Blvd. late the night of April 25 or early the next morning, according to police. The burglar forced open a back door and stole two bags that were hanging on the wall, within arms reach of the door. One of the bags was a purse; the other, the resident’s lunch. The jury has decided the fate of a former Elkridge resident accused of killing his wife more than 20 years ago.
After hours of deliberation, a jury has found Robert Jarrett Jr. guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his former wife, Christine Jarrett, the Baltimore Sun reported. Prosecutors had been seeking a first-degree murder conviction for Robert Jarrett, who reported Christine Jarrett missing in 1991. At the time, a detective on the case said that he thought she had run away. More than 20 years later, in April 2012, police found a body later identified as Christine Jarrett buried in concrete under a shed in the back yard of the Claire Drive house the couple had shared.
