Questions will center around overcrowding in schools.
The Greater Elkridge Community Association (GECA) is scheduled to host the Board of Education candidates for a forum on Thursday in Elkridge that revolves around overcrowding in Howard County Public Schools. GECA wrote in an announcement for the forum that a redistricting plan to fill a new elementary school on Ducketts Lane in Elkridge to alleviate overcrowding is not a long-term solution. "Now is your chance to meet the Board of Education candidates, who we will elect in November, and ask them tough questions about how they plan to solve these problems," wrote GECA in the announcement. Patch will be liveblogging from the forum on Thursday evening. The forum will start at 7 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 6274 Montgomery Road, Elkridge…

Foose said she wants to make sure impact of poverty is addressed in process.
Howard County Schools Superintendent Renee Foose told a crowd of parents at a listen and learn session this week that she has asked her staff to re-examine redistricting plans, according to Explore Howard. At the forum Monday, one specific focus she addressed was the need to balance out the impact of poverty on schools being redistricted, wrote Explore Howard. A committee is scheduled to present its redistricting plan to the Howard County Board of Education later this month. The redistricting proposal is being created as a new elementary school is set to open in the fall of 2013 on Ducketts Lane in Elkridge. The new elementary school is needed to accommodate current school overcrowding and with it, shifting students is necessary to …

A string of kick-in burglaries around Howard County have led police to ask residents to be vigilant.
A string of daytime burglaries in Howard County in which doors have been kicked in has prompted the following police warnings: Use your dead bolt, hide your valuables in unexpected places and report any suspicious activity. The burglaries began on Monday, with seven daytime burglaries at residences in Ellicott City, Columbia and Clarksville, according to police, then continued with one in Elkridge on Tuesday, and two more on Wednesday in Ellicott City and Woodbine. The suspect is believed to first knock on the door of the home to determine if anyone is home, and then kick the door in to gain entry, according to police. John Sarbanes responds to "Stop Intermodal Now" signs.
It was not a surprise that there were demonstrators out protesting the intermodal facility when Rep. John Sarbanes, D-MD, visited Elkridge, said his staff. The congress member made an appearance at the Elkridge Senior Center on Wednesday to keep his constituents up to date about what's going on in Washington. Before he began his presentation, however, Sarbanes stopped to meet with greater Elkridge residents holding protest signs outside. For several minutes, Sarbanes listened to citizens who live near Hanover and Race Roads, one of four areas that state and railroad officials are considering for a train-truck depot. Residents cited noise, pollution, lack of transparency and health hazards among reasons they want their neighborhood removed …
In the third part of a series on local historic sites at risk, learn about the nation's first curved railroad bridge.
Each spring, Preservation Howard County publishes a list of historic or culturally significant properties that are threatened by development, deterioration or neglect. The Howard County nonprofit started producing the list in 2001, one year after the organization was born. “We developed the top 10 list and a Preservationist of the Year award because we needed to advocate for historic buildings, structures and cemeteries,” said Fred Dorsey, president of Preservation Howard County. On this year's list of 10 properties, 3 are in Elkridge: Clover Hill, Belmont and Thomas Viaduct. Built in 1835 and boasting eight arches, Thomas Viaduct is the world’s largest stone railroad bridge, according to the Maryland Historic Trust. The viaduct was …

Greater Elkridge activist creates a model web site.
To protect their neighborhood from the freight transfer facility they believe will destroy it, greater Elkridge residents have rallied in person and online. Now, one man has created an interactive web site, elkridgeqol.org, which he hopes will serve as a model for community activists around the country. In March, CSX and the Maryland Department of Transportation announced they were evaluating a site on Hanover and Race Roads for an intermodal facility. The station would be a hub for transferring cargo containers between trains and trucks using electric cranes, an activity that officials said would run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Citing concerns about noise, bright lights, safety, traffic, the environment, a potential elementary school…

On Wednesday night, more than 200 Elkridge citizens asked questions about the freight transfer station that CSX wants to build in central Maryland.
After CSX failed to disclose nearly $1 million in property purchases on Hanover and Race Roads, greater Elkridge residents said they need to be convinced the search for a freight transfer facility will be open and above board. "There is a lot of information that has not been forthcoming," said Gail Sigel at the April 27 public workshop in Elkridge about the proposed intermodal facility. The site at Hanover and Race Roads is one of four locations the state and CSX are considering for the project, which would enable trains and trucks to swap containers of freight. Sigel attended all three workshops in the counties where the proposed sites for the project are located; last week, there was one in Prince George's County and another in Anne …
