3 Things to Know About Elkridge Today: May 24

Head into the day a little more informed.

Today Norbel School in Elkridge is hosting its 30-year anniversary celebration. The public is invited on campus at 2:15 p.m. for a tree planting, bench dedication and cookout. There’s a 50 percent chance of rain today in Elkridge, most likely between noon and midnight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Temperatures may go up to 86 degrees during the day and down to 63 degrees in the evening, reported the NWS. On May 24, 1830, trains on the B & O Railroad were able to take passengers from Baltimore to Ellicott Mills (Ellicott City) for the first time, according to current railroad owner CSX.

Patapsco River Steward Named ‘Volunteer of the Year’ by His Peers

Members of a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and protecting the Patapsco River Valley reviewed their group's annual accomplishments, which included participation from more than 1,000 volunteers.

Before an audience of 250-plus in Ellicott City, Friends of Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway (FPVHG) announced its volunteer of the year—Tim Titus—who brings unique expertise to the nonprofit group after a career with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “I spent 30 years as an administrative executive at EPA telling others to go forth and do good work; now that I’m retired, I finally get to get my hands dirty," said Titus. As part of the award presentation, FPVHG Executive Director Betsy McMillion read a few glowing excerpts from papers written by Howard Community College students who were trained in stream maintenance by Titus. “He is the one that probably taught me the most stuff.
