Harley-Davidson in Elkridge Is Going out of Business After 35 Years
As disposable income wanes due to the Great Recession, motorcycle dealers feel the pinch, leading to closings and consolidations.
Harley-Davidson of Maryland will close permanently on Feb. 28. “The business is closing, in part, due to the down economy,” said Tina Ice, 66, who has owned the Elkridge dealership for 20 years. She plans to retire and move to Wallace, NC, where she and her husband will build a new home. A retirement party for Ice is planned for Feb. 5 at the store, located at 7010 Troy Hill Drive. “Selling the dealership was an option, but it would have been harder than a retirement, which serves to strengthen the other dealers in the area,” explained Ice. There are Harley-Davidson dealers in Essex, Laurel, Annapolis and Frederick. Nationally, Harley-Davidson USA is consolidating dealerships. Rumors have circulated that some dealers have been offered …
