Howard County public school students and parents can now start planning for the 2013-14 first day of school.
The first day of school for Howard County public school students will be on Aug. 26, 2013, according to the recently approved 2013-14 Howard County public schools academic calendar. The school year will begin on Aug. 19 for teachers. The last day of school in Howard County for the 2012-13 school year is currently scheduled for June 20, according to the online calendar. For the 2013-14 academic year, winter break is scheduled for Dec. 23 through Jan. 1 and spring break is April 14-21. The last day of school for the next academic year is June 18, depending on how many of the five inclement weather days are used. Patricia Kelly Murray will spend 90 days in jail.
A Howard County high school assistant principal will spend 90 days in prison for stealing colleagues’ credit cards, according to a spokesman for the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office. Patricia Kelly Murray, 40, of Severna Park, pleaded guilty in June to stealing credit cards from a vice principal at Long Reach High School and a principal at Laurel Woods. Prosecutors said Murray, who is listed by the school system as an assistant principal at Howard High School, made eight purchases worth nearly $1,800 on Dec. 15, 2011, using the vice principal’s card. Deputy Superintendent Mamie Perkins steps down, one of several changes to the Howard County Public School System this year.
Mamie Perkins, a Howard County Public School System employee of 26 years, announced her retirement as deputy superintendent as the school system prepares for a realignment directed by the new superintendent Renee Foose. Perkins said her plan was to retire after a new superintendent was fully transitioned, but before the new school year started, according to the Howard County Times. Her retirement became official on Aug. 1. For several months during former superintendent Sydney Cousin's cancer treatment last year, Perkins was interim superintendent. The county says a "technical error" caused two schools to fail in meeting goals for special education students, and the state will recalculate.
The Maryland State Department of Education released scores for school districts in the 2012 Maryland State Assessment (MSA) and the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) mostly saw slight increases, but not without a hitch. Two schools–Clarksville Middle School in Clarksville and Mount View Middle School in Marriottsville–failed to meet requirements in their special education groups, according to a HCPSS press release. According to county school officials, there was an error in calculating the proficiency scores, which will be recalculated by the state.
