Howard County School Board Writes to Transportation Officials

Chairwoman of the Board of Education said the correspondence is to keep Maryland Department of Transportation apprised of its plans.

The Howard County Board of Education planned to send a letter to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) this week to inform the department about plans for a middle school on Coca Cola Drive—a site that could be less than 2 miles from a proposed freight hub. The Maryland Department of Transportation and CSX are currently evaluating four sites for a train-truck operation called an "intermodal facility," and one location is within 1.5 miles of the middle school site. “We've drafted a letter and are expressing that we’d like them to consider our plans as part of the [intermodal site selection] process,” said Janet Siddiqui, chair of the Howard County Board of Education, speaking during an outreach event in Elkridge on Oct. 29. …

It is good to see the Board of Education taking a position where they are communicating with other agencies and expressing their concerns for what is needed for our children, instead of just reacting to what everyone else is doing, to include developers.   more ›

Is School Board Study Commission Asking Right Questions?

Examining school board's mission, community engagement and campaigns.

A letter to the Howard County Board of Education Study Commission: Last month, I attended a public forum in the North Laurel Community Center presented by the County Executive. I listened as a local residents presented concern over the lack of service or attention by the sitting Board of Education to the problems in their schools. In addition, I heard that they are not fairly represented by the board, for no one from their area is on the board, nor are there enough minorities on the board to understand everyone’s issues and concerns. I have to wonder: what are the issues that would be resolved by making any change to the current selection process for the Board of Education? The current system is NOT fine, obviously, or we wouldn't be having this discussion. There is lack of representation from the areas in the county that need it the most, including Elkridge. I am appalled that Howard Johnson and his GECA would not recognize that. The people who oppose the resolution simply refuse to recognize that the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude does not apply …   more ›
