Study of Intermodal Sites in Greater Elkridge Suspended

An environmental review process in Hanover, Jessup and Beltsville properties has halted, state official said.

A federally mandated study of four sites in central Maryland for a train-truck facility—three in the greater Elkridge area—has been halted as transportation officials look to Baltimore City for a CSX freight project instead. Since March 2011, CSX and Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) have been eyeing Howard, Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties for an intermodal facility that would serve as a regional hub for freight transfers. Residents in greater Elkridge expressed concern about their health and property values should the large-scale operation be located nearby. Of the four sites being considered, one is on Hanover at Race roads; another, on Montevideo at Dorsey Run roads; a third at Brock Bridge Road; and another in …

Greater Elkridge Protesters Get Rep. Sarbanes' Attention

John Sarbanes responds to "Stop Intermodal Now" signs.

It was not a surprise that there were demonstrators out protesting the intermodal facility when Rep. John Sarbanes, D-MD, visited Elkridge, said his staff. The congress member made an appearance at the Elkridge Senior Center on Wednesday to keep his constituents up to date about what's going on in Washington. Before he began his presentation, however, Sarbanes stopped to meet with greater Elkridge residents holding protest signs outside. For several minutes, Sarbanes listened to citizens who live near Hanover and Race Roads, one of four areas that state and railroad officials are considering for a train-truck depot. Residents cited noise, pollution, lack of transparency and health hazards among reasons they want their neighborhood removed …

Elkridge Workshop on Train-Truck Facility Draws Crowd Seeking Answers

On Wednesday night, more than 200 Elkridge citizens asked questions about the freight transfer station that CSX wants to build in central Maryland.

After CSX failed to disclose nearly $1 million in property purchases on Hanover and Race Roads, greater Elkridge residents said they need to be convinced the search for a freight transfer facility will be open and above board. "There is a lot of information that has not been forthcoming," said Gail Sigel at the April 27 public workshop in Elkridge about the proposed intermodal facility. The site at Hanover and Race Roads is one of four locations the state and CSX are considering for the project, which would enable trains and trucks to swap containers of freight. Sigel attended all three workshops in the counties where the proposed sites for the project are located; last week, there was one in Prince George's County and another in Anne …

As a point of clarification, the research was with the Surface Transportation Board (the old Interstate Commerce Commission), subelement of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Both MDOT and CSX have filed "things" with the Surface Transportation Board on CD-ROM, and all that appear in the filing notifications are a docket or file number... which precludes public linkage between the actual …   more ›
