Louis W. Uccellini will be the 16th director of the National Weather Service.
A Columbia resident for over 30 years has been named the new director of the National Weather Service. Dr. Louis W. Uccellini, 63, who said he moved into his current house in Oakland Mills in August 1978, was selected as the 16th director of the National Weather Service, which this year marked its 143rd anniversary predicting and keeping records of weather. Uccellini will officially take the helm of the National Weather Service on Feb. 10. "I'm excited to get going, to lead this agency and to move it forward" said Uccellini, in an interview with Patch. The tornado watch & flood advisories cover much of Maryland Wednesday night into Thursday.
(Update 8:00 p.m.)—The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 10 Maryland counties. Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Carroll, Harford Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties were listed on the weather site's alert. The watch is in effect until 2 a.m. Thursday. Harford, Carroll, Howard, Northern Baltimore, Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties, and South Baltimore are under flood advisories until 4 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for Baltimore City, and Howard, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince George's counties. AccuWeather is warning of a storm possibly bringing snow, power outages and coastal flooding next week.
A "substantial" winter storm could blow its way through Maryland by the middle of next week, according to the weather website AccuWeather. The website’s current forecast predicts a potential for rain that could turn into snow, with coastal flooding and power outages. “While the details are still uncertain, a larger, slower-moving and more powerful storm could slam the mid-Atlantic and New England with heavy precipitation, strong winds and above-normal tides Tuesday (Dec. 18) into Thursday (Dec. 20),” according to an email from AccuWeather. The current forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a chance of rain through the early part of next week, but doesn’t currently predict any snow for the area.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey a couple of hours ago and Marylanders can expect heavy rain and strong winds for the next 12 hours.
The eye of Hurricane Sandy is making its way through the upper Chesapeake Bay and 280,000 Maryland residents are without power, Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday night. The storm made landfall near Cape May, New Jersey, earlier Monday night, according to meteorologist Ken Wedelski of the National Weather Service. It is moving on a north/northwest course but is slowing down, moving at about 23 mph. About half of the citizens in Cecil and Harford counties are without power. Rain and strong winds will continue in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Experts are warning that areas along the East Coast could see flash flooding Wednesday as the remnants of Isaac send bouts of heavy rain our way. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of the Baltimore/Washington region, including Carroll and Howard counties. The saga of the derecho storm-related power outages is about to come to an end, but the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company is warning customers to expect more outages, as there are storms in the forecast through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday night and a 50 percent chance of storms Sunday. "Customers are urged to make preparations in advance of likely new weather-related power outages," BGE said in a statement released Saturday. BGE also announced Saturday that approximately 650 residents were still without power as a result of the storm last Friday. Highway and utility crews prepare for storm.
A winter weather advisory for snow, sleet and freezing rain is in effect from 11 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS forecast one to two inches of snow and sleet Friday evening before the precipitation changes to freezing rain Saturday morning. Temperatures should be in the mid-to-upper 20s Friday night, which is below freezing, and the NWS said ice is expected to accumulate on trees and power lines. In the event of downed power lines, BGE advised people to call 1-877-778-2222. The utility company said to report power outages to 410-685-0123.
