O’Malley to Visit Elkridge to Talk About Sequestration Budget

Are those around you worried about the threat of sequestration cuts? Tell us in the comments.

Gov. Martin O’Malley has plans to visit an Elkridge manufacturing business Wednesday where he says he will urge Congress to act against federal sequestration cuts. O’Malley will be speaking at 10 a.m. at FLIR Systems, 6610 Amberton Dr. in Elkridge, and will also be addressing his thoughts on how the sequester could impact Maryland. Sign up for the Elkridge Patch newsletter here and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for instant news updates and community conversations. O’Malley’s office said FLIR was an “advanced manufacturing business that employs middle-skill workers.” Without action from Congress, the sequester would go into effect automatically on March 1, reducing spending in a number of areas, including education, the environment, …

I guess he will talk about how it was a good thing to raise taxes to keep us status quo during the sequestrian? I guess they are holding the meeting off of Amberton Drive in one of the vacant warehouses so he can get his head that has grown 10 times too big thru a roll up door!   more ›

Middle East Violence Scrubs O'Malley Trade Mission

Maryland delegation was set to leave next week on eight-day trip to Israel, Jordan and the West Bank.

The escalating conflict in the Gaza Strip has forced Gov. Martin O’Malley to postpone his eight-day trade mission to the Middle East. O’Malley (D) and a delegation of elected officials and business leaders were set to leave next week for Israel, Jordan and the West Bank city of Ramallah, The Washington Post reported. He announced his decision today after mounting Hamas rocket strikes and Israeli counter-strikes that have left more than 100 dead in the past week. “Not wanting to be a distraction from the urgent cause of peace, I look forward to visiting Israel in the months ahead with Maryland business, research and academic leaders,” O’Malley said in a statement. “For now, we join with our Israeli and Palestinian neighbors in praying for a…

OPINION: Shifting the Blame

The governor's proposal to shift teacher pension costs from the state to the county could have far-reaching negative effects.

Gov. Martin O’Malley, as part of an incredibly ambitious (hubristic?) legislative session, has proposed shifting the burden of teacher pensions from the state to the counties, a move that has been vigorously opposed by most local governments, led by Howard’s own Ken Ulman. Initial reaction from people I’ve spoken to has been muted, if they’re even aware of the issue. Attentions are shifted by a proposed gas tax and same-sex marriage bill and this issue is sneaking by, despite the direct and long-term impact it could have on both your wallet and your children’s education. The simple fact is that a teacher pension shift will have immediate and far-reaching impact on everything from local police patrols to the ability of the school system to…

Retirement is such an unnatural situation, what being on the planet other then man can just stop and expect the rest of the world to carry the burden. We all have a very narrow view of the world. Because the last 100 years or so has brought us to this point has very little to do with the future of humanity. With the demands of the number of people in the world we have reached capacity. O'Malley Rolls Out Gas Tax, Highlights Tough Choices

Republicans say governor's tax proposals will hurt the working families he wants to help.

During his sixth State of the State speech, Gov. Martin O'Malley focused on jobs, taxes and what he called tough choices. "Asking our fellow citizens to do more will not be popular," said O'Malley. "But without anger, fear or meanness, let’s ask one another: how much less education do we think would be good for our children’s future? How much less education do we want? How much less public safety? How many fewer jobs? There are costs, and there are values." O'Malley briefly touched on the gas tax—the most anticipated portion of his message—in his nearly 33-minute address to legislators gathered in the House of Delegates chamber Wednesday. The governor said a bill would be filed in the next couple days. "With a growing population and aging …

Maryland like many other states and especially the federal government is great at mismanaging capital funds and fiscal wastefulness. Sadly the republicans are no different than the democrats. Both political parties are equally to blame for the USA's current state of financial turmoil. Both political parties have no real incentive to change a corrupt political system, as the majority of …   more ›
