The former teacher also says redistricting process is 'broken.'
Ann De Lacy has a lot of questions about the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), and she plans to bring them all to the table as a newly elected member of the Board of Education. “I will continue to work very hard to make sure that things are open, public and that we have a truly world class school system for every single student in Howard County,” she said Wednesday morning. “I’m going to ask tough questions and expect honest answers.” In a race that at times saw candidates separated by less than one percent, De Lacy came in second place, with 16.6 percent of the vote. Incumbents Janet Siddiqui and Ellen Flynn Giles came in first and third place, respectively. Coming in fourth was Bob Ballinger, with 15.35 percent; David Gertler…

Find out about the six candidates running for seats on the Howard County Board of Education
On Monday, Patch spoke with candidates for Board of Education, perhaps the tightest race in Tuesday's election in Howard County . The six candidates are hoping to be one of three candidates who win seats. Voters select three candidates on the ballot. Here's more on each candidate, listed in alphabetical order: Bob Ballinger Ballinger, of Ellicott City, said on Monday he was spending the last few hours before Tuesday’s election with good friends and making sure his signs are at the polls. During his campaign, Ballinger has focused on fiscal responsibility in the school system, championing early childhood education, and allowing open enrollment, in which parents would be able to send their kids to the school of their choice. Ballinger, who …

Closing arguments in Howard County Board of Education case scheduled for Wednesday.
Testimony continued last week after a judge denied a motion to dismiss the charges in the hearing to remove Allen Dyer from the Howard County Board of Education, according to the Howard County Times. During Wednesday’s hearing, Dyer responded to individual accusations laid out in the complaint, filed by the Board of Education in June 2011, which sought to have Dyer removed by the state from his position on the Board, the Baltimore Sun reported. Included in the accusations were charges that Dyer had breached confidentiality rules and that his repeated lawsuits against the Board had made it difficult for the Board to function. The suit also alleged that he used his position to “threaten, bully or embarrass other members of the Board and …

School board member Allen Dyer, known for suing the Howard County Board of Education, is now suing individual members.
Allen Dyer is headed back to court. According to the Baltimore Sun, Dyer had four members of the Howard County Board of Education, on which he sits, served with a civil complaint just before recess at Tuesday evening’s board meeting. According to court records the complaints—against Frank Aquino, Sandra French, Ellen Flynn Giles and Janet Siddiqui—were filed with the Circuit Court on May 9. Dyer told the Sun that he waited nearly two weeks to have them served because it was convenient having all four together at once. The complaint accuses the four of violating Open Meetings Act requirements in sevaral instances during the search for a new superintendent, according to the Sun. Dyer has made what some have called a career of suing the …

The school board will vote on Renee Foose at a public meeting.
The Howard County Board of Education will vote on the school system's next superintendent on April 26, according to a statement issued Thursday. Current superintendent Sydney Cousin will retire at the end of June, and Deputy Superintendent for Baltimore County Public Schools Renee Foose will be voted on as his successor. The school board announced it offered the job to Foose on March 27, but the group is required to vote in public to make the decision official. "Spring break threw everything for a loop," Board of Education Chair Sandra French said of the delay between the decision to hire Foose and taking the public vote. Spring break for the Howard County Public School System was April 2 to 9. Baltimore County, which also hired a new …

Current school board member Brian Meshkin applauds the diverse pool of candidates, says county executive should not take credit.
Dear Editor: I read with humor the letter from County Executive Ulman published [in the Howard County Times] on Jan. 23 somehow trying to take credit for the large and diverse [pool of] candidates running for the Board of Education in this upcoming election. I applaud all who continue to sacrifice their time and efforts across our school system. It is those parents, educators, students, administrators and leaders who deserve the credit. It is the taxpayer—who pays more per capita of their wealth than any other taxpayer in the State of Maryland for education—that deserves the gratitude. In 2010, I was privileged to run with 10 other individuals for 4 positions. This year, we will witness a similar contest of 15 individuals vying for 3 …

It doesn't sound like anything was said against DeLacy, just the idea of shuffling kids based on income. I actually like the idea of basic education principles being brought back to the classroom. As far as redistricting though, let's solve the problems, not just re-shuffle them. You want to see improvement? Don't just mix the low test scores in with the high test scores - all that will do is …   more ›
