Police Talk Stranger Danger in Elkridge

Howard County police met with parents after several reports of suspicious activity near school bus stops.

One day when Jeff was away from home, someone threw a mailbox through his front window. “That’s when I got the camera,” he said, standing in the cafeteria of Rockburn Elementary School on Tuesday evening.  Jeff, who asked that his last name not be printed, not only installed a security camera on his property, he also got a license plate tag reader to identify cars driving by. He joined other parents on Feb. 7 to discuss child safety with members of the Howard County Police Department after a rash of "stranger danger" in the area. Since the beginning of January, there have been seven reports of suspicious circumstances with strangers attempting to engage or acting suspicious near children, according to the police department. Three were in …

County, School Officials Hope to Streamline Communication of Emergencies

"There's got to be a better way to communicate," Councilman Calvin Ball told the school board.

County Council members this week questioned Howard County Board of Education members about recent incidents that may have put children on school buses in danger and the ways those incidents were reported to parents. Council members Calvin Ball and Jen Terrasa Tuesday raised concerns about a group of young men who surrounded and harassed a bus near Laurel Woods with elementary school students onboard, an incident in which people threw rocks at a school bus, as well as multiple reports of suspicious activity near groups of children in Elkridge and Ellicott City. Laurel Woods administrators sent students home with a note about the "gang-like" activity, but Terrasa said she didn't find out about the incidents until a week after they occurred. …

Parents Concerned After Fourth 'Stranger Danger' Report

With at least four reports of strangers acting suspiciously near Elkridge area children in less than two weeks, officials and families emphasize vigilance, communication.

Schools, parents and police are on alert after a 9-year-old girl reported that a man she didn’t know approached her and offered her candy after school in Ilchester on Tuesday. Diane Mumford, principal at Elkridge Elementary School, sent an email to parents on Wednesday morning with information about what transpired with the Ilchester student, noting that Ilchester Elementary was .3 mile from Elkridge Elementary. “Yesterday, Jan. 17, after school…[a] 9-year-old girl was walking home from the bus stop in the Ilchester neighborhood [when] a man in a dark-colored car pulled up to the curb,” stated the email. “The man slid into the passenger seat and asked her if she had seen his missing dog. He then proceeded to offer her candy," said the …

Rockburn Incident Heightens Safety Awareness

After a student was reportedly offered a lift to school from a stranger, police are investigating and administrators issue precautions.

Several Howard County schools sent emails to parents this week warning of “stranger danger” after a student at Rockburn Elementary said a stranger offered him a ride to school Tuesday morning. Rockburn Elementary School Principal Lauren Bauer sent a letter to parents on Jan. 3 that a student reported as he was walking to a bus stop in Rockburn Township, a man in a silver car pulled up to the curb and offered him a ride. When the student called out to a friend and ran away, the driver made a U-turn and left, said Bauer in the letter. "Since I had the report, I wanted to let the parents in the area know," said Bauer in a phone interview with Elkridge Patch. Parents told the principal they were grateful for the information. "Our PTA meeting …

I think you may be correct that it was not emailed but was instead sent home as a hard-copy letter to parents at Rockburn. Other schools—including Deep Run, Bellows Spring, Bonnie Branch and Elkridge Elementary—sent the letter to parents via email. We will update the article with this information. Thanks for the catch, Susan!   more ›
