Government officials on 'liberal leave.'
The Howard County Public School System has cancelled school today as the snowstorm dubbed 'Snowquester' began dumping what the National Weather Service predicts will be up to 10 inches of snow on the area. Accordig to a statement released by the school system, in addition to classes, "All evening activities in schools, both school-sponsored and community-sponsored, are canceled. This includes high school athletic practices and games." Howard County government officials are on 'liberal leave,' meaning employees with time off can take the day off. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for Howard County and much of the Baltimore and DC region Thursday and forecasts a possible five - or more - inches of snow. A winter storm watch means there is the potential for significant snowfall, as opposed to a warning, which indicates a storm is imminent. Precipitation will begin as a mix of snow and rain Thursday morning, changing to snow later in the morning and through the afternoon, according to the watch. "Snow may be heavy at times during the afternoon and evening," according to the storm watch, which means the evening commute might be affected. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for Howard County until 1 p.m. Wednesday as a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow moves through Maryland. According to NWS, the wintry mix will continue through early Wednesday afternoon. With temperatures hovering in the upper 20s and lower 30s Wednesday morning and winds gusting up to 35 mph, the roads remain slick and travel conditions “treacherous.” The wintry mix should turn into all rain by this afternoon, according to NWS, as temperatures rise above freezing. NWS expects precipitation to move off the coast early Thursday morning, leaving behind a dry, cold, windy day, which will “help to dry the region but do little to warm it up.” Wind speeds of 30 – 40 mph …

AccuWeather is warning of a storm possibly bringing snow, power outages and coastal flooding next week.
A "substantial" winter storm could blow its way through Maryland by the middle of next week, according to the weather website AccuWeather. The website’s current forecast predicts a potential for rain that could turn into snow, with coastal flooding and power outages. “While the details are still uncertain, a larger, slower-moving and more powerful storm could slam the mid-Atlantic and New England with heavy precipitation, strong winds and above-normal tides Tuesday (Dec. 18) into Thursday (Dec. 20),” according to an email from AccuWeather. The current forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a chance of rain through the early part of next week, but doesn’t currently predict any snow for the area.
