Mutts Matter: Little Guy With A Big Personality

Duke is a fun-loving, young miniature pinscher mix who gets along well with everyone and is looking for his new family.

Hey guys, my name is Duke and I’m very pleased to meet you! I’m a charming and energetic one-and-a-half to two year old miniature pinscher mix with loads of personality. I’m the complete package: smart, social, affectionate, and playful, with a little mischief mixed in to keep things interesting. I only weigh about 12 pounds, but I’m no shrinking violet, and can run and play with the best of them. Sadly, my owners surrendered me to a shelter in Maryland, and said they just didn’t want me anymore. I don’t understand it, but I’m better off without those guys anyway. I was pretty scared in the shelter and realize how lucky I am to make it out alive. I’ve settled into home life now, and am so thankful for my second chance and the opportunity…

With so many deserving dogs in need of a home, how do you choose the right one for you? Use our guide to help.

Adding a dog to your family can be such a rewarding and life-changing experience. They enrich our lives and have the amazing ability to give and receive love unconditionally. A dog is a loyal companion and friend, an instant playmate, a guardian, but they are also a long-term commitment. You will be the most special person in your dog’s life and they will be dependent on you. As a member of your family, it will be your responsibility to care and provide for your dog in sickness and in health. Before making this major life decision, it’s important to think it through and find the dog that best fits your lifestyle, personality, and family dynamic. The choice can be overwhelming; there are so many adorable dogs to choose from, and they all …

Mutts Matter: Sweetie’s Heart of Gold

Meet Sweetie, a delightful Rottweiler mix who has a lot of love to give and deserves a great home.

Sweetie’s name suits her perfectly; she has a heart of gold, a gentle nature, and is as sweet as can be. She has not always been properly cared for by her human family, but that hasn’t impacted her spirit or love of people one bit. Sweetie is a six-year-old, 98-pound Rottweiler mix, a breed that’s often mischaracterized because they are a large, dark, and powerful dog. In reality, they are highly intelligent, loyal protectors of their family, and do so well in obedience training that they make excellent service and therapy dogs. Sweetie would be great in a service role because of her loving and calm nature, and her ability to roll through life’s different obstacles with ease. She’s the perfect companion dog, affectionate, loyal, social, …

Happy Happy, Joy Joy!

Happy is an adorable, playful, and entertaining little pup who will make a great sidekick.

When you see Happy, you just have to smile. He’s a little pup with a big personality and a zest for life. He has a great temperament and just wants to play, love, and have a family to call his own. Mutts Matter named him Hapsburg, or “Happy” for short, because he’s always smiling, wagging his tail, and excited to see you. We think Happy is some type of longhaired Chihuahua mix, and he’s still a young, energetic pup at less than two years old. He only weighs ten pounds, and has a silky, golden coat and a funny little underbite that makes him stand out from the pack. We don’t know a lot about Happy’s background because he was picked up as a stray. He’s being fostered by first-time foster dad, Matt, who, in the process of looking to adopt a…

Fetching Kia

Meet Kia, a handsome shepherd mix who is playful, affectionate, and a loyal family dog.

Hi, guys! My name’s Kia and I’ve been waiting patiently to find my new family for a while now. I’m not sure what the holdup is, so I’m taking this time to introduce myself because I know they are out there. I’m still a young pup at only three years old, and I have a goofy, playful nature and am an active dog. I weigh about 60 pounds, and Mutts Matter thinks I’m a shepherd mix, though some folks have suggested I may have some rottweiler or hound in me too. I just know I’m a mutt and proud of it. I’m a handsome dog with a sturdy build, shiny coat, and a big, infectious smile. My foster mom, Kelly, calls me a cuddle bug because I’m affectionate and always want to be next to her. I follow her from room to room, and if she lies down on the …

Industrious Little Jonah

Cute little Jonah has a sweet nature and independent spirit that makes him the perfect companion.

Jonah is an adorable cocker spaniel puppy who is barely a year old and weighs 28 pounds. He has the softest, silky coat with beautiful rich chocolate and creamy white coloring, and big round puppy-dog eyes that just make you smile. With that perfect older-puppy temperament where he’s still playful and loves to hang out with you, but also independent and smart, Jonah doesn’t need constant attention… he’s got things to do.  Little Jonah took it upon himself to escape from a very hard life. He was found running at large with a bark collar and part of a chain still attached to him. He was being kept outside and neglected; his coat was matted, he had cherry eye, and he had tested positive for heartworm. These issues, and the discomfort Jonah …

Lucky's Best Is Yet To Come

Meet Lucky, a beautiful, young plott hound mix who needs a little luck in her life.

Hey there, Patch friends! My name is Lucky and I’m very pleased to meet you. I’m a gorgeous plott hound mix with striking, honey-brown eyes, and a vibrant dark brindle coat that really makes me stand out from the pack. I weigh about 50 pounds, but I’m just a little over a year old, so I still have some filling out and maturing to do. I’m a sweet and affectionate dog who needs some structure and leadership in my life. I’m great inside the house with my foster family and their dogs, but it takes me some time to trust new people and new situations. I think I probably need my own personal dog whisperer, a strong leader who will work with me to complete my rehabilitation. I will admit that it’s a little ironic that my name is Lucky, since …

Odie The Optimist

Meet Odie, a lovable, special needs pug who is looking for his special someone.

Hey, guys! My name is Odie, and I’m one of those glass-half-full types of dog. I find joy in the simple pleasures of life, like snuggling with my person and eating treats of any kind. Love and food... what more do you need? I’m a six or seven year old pug, weigh a little over 20 pounds, and am almost totally blind, but that doesn’t stop me or dampen my spirits. I’m a healthy and resilient dog who is both confident and social, and I love to share affection.  Mutts Matter rescued me on Thanksgiving eve, when a kind soul reached out to them for help. I’m a casualty of divorce, and then my dad no longer wanted me, so he wouldn’t let me in the house. I was living outside, tied up to porch and exposed to all the elements. This was a pretty …

New Year, New Chance For Duncan

Meet Duncan, a handsome young mastiff mix who has been patiently waiting for his new family and a place to belong.

Hey guys, Happy New Year! I’m checking back in to let you know I’m still here, patiently waiting and longing for my new family. I know they’re out there, so please read and share my story so they can find me.  Please allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Duncan, and I’m a loving, playful, and sometimes mischievous young mastiff mix. Folks tell me I’m handsome, and I have to agree with them... I’m a strapping 75 pounds, and have a unique, sable-colored coat and striking grey-green eyes. Mutts Matter thinks I may have some Labrador in me too. I’m still a young pup at only 18 months old, and like most adolescents I will try to test my boundaries, but isn’t that what youth is all about? I just need an assertive leader to help show me …

Thank You!

Patch readers made a real difference in helping to save nearly 350 dogs this year.

As 2012 draws to a close, Mutts Matter Rescue would like to thank the Patch community and our network of dedicated volunteers for your tremendous support. With your help, we saved nearly 350 dogs this year, expanded our team, added new foster families, and hopefully made folks more aware of the importance and need for dog rescue.  Rescue is a community of volunteers, so we couldn’t do it without you. Whether you’ve helped by sharing our pups’ stories with your friends and family on Facebook, donating to help cover veterinary costs, fostering, or doing home visits, it all makes a difference in saving these dogs’ lives. We live very busy, demanding lives here in the DC area, but taking some time out to help our little furry friends is not …

Hal SavesDogs Horenberg

2:34 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2012

Thank you for the thank you. I for one want to thank Mutts Matter Rescue and Melanie for what they do for homeless dogs. I have fostered dogs for this group for one year. I have personally witnessed a well run organization with leadership that truly cares for every animal brought into it's fold. Dogs are taken from horrible places, given full physicals, medical care provided no matter the cost. I…   more ›
