Health Officials Engage Communities in Freight Project Study

The National Center for Healthy Housing will visit Elkridge Wednesday to collect data.

Traffic, natural resources and loss of jobs were the major concerns Beltsville residents raised during a meeting Monday about a proposed freight facility project and its impact on their health.  In particular, residents mentioned the desire to protect a unique part of their world: the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), with its open space that has shaped the area's low-density development and infrastructure. CSX and Maryland Department of Transportation are currently proposing an "intermodal" facility at four sites, including one within BARC, where trains and up to 900 trucks a day would swap cargo, and containers could be double-stacked on trains via electric cranes. I feel very bad for the people living near whatever site gets selected, all of them are far less than ideal. However from my decade of travels here the Beltsville or the Jessup site seem to be the most appropriate choices, relatively speaking. Sorry to my PG county friends but I am rooting for Beltsville if this cannot be avoided :(   more ›

Oxford Square Designated as New Middle School Site

The school has a tentative opening date of 2014, according to planners.

The Board of Education voted on Thursday evening to designate Oxford Square on Coca Cola Drive as the new middle school site for the northeast. Based on enrollment projections, which showed that middle schools in the northeast would exceed 110 percent capacity by 2014, school planners said the board asked them recently to accelerate their search for the middle school. Initially, planners were looking to open the new middle school by 2015.
