A judge said prosecutors didn't share required information.
The Baltimore man found guilty last month of murdering 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes will get a new trial, according to WBAL-TV. A judge Wednesday was supposed to sentence Michael Maurice Johnson. Instead, Judge Alfred Nance said prosecutors failed to give Johnson’s lawyers new information about one of their witnesses, according to the Baltimore Sun. Johnson faced 30 years in prison for killing Barnes, a North Carolina resident who was in Baltimore visiting her half-sister. She went missing in December 2010. After a search that spread throughout much of the state, including Howard County, Barnes’s body was found Susquehanna River in April 2010. Johnson’s attorneys said prosecutors overstated the credibility of James McCray, a witness who …

Attorneys question state's key witness, jury's verdict.
Lawyers representing the man who was convicted of killing 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes are asking for a new trial, the Baltimore Sun reports. Attorneys for Michael Maurice Johnson say that the state made improper statements and withheld information about its main witness, James McCray, who testified that Johnson asked for help disposing of Barnes’ body. According to the Sun, McCray gave the wrong date of the crime and the wrong floor for Johnson’s apartment, Prosecutors, however, said he did know details about the defendant that had not been released to the press, for example, that Johnson called Barnes “little sis.” A jury took two days to convict Johnson of second-degree murder; he faces 30 years in prison. His attorneys, the Sun report…

Michael Maurice Johnson of Baltimore was found guilty of second-degree murder.
A jury Wednesday found a Baltimore man guilty of second-degree murder in the case of Phylicia Barnes, a teen whose body was found in the Susquehanna River in 2011, according to The Baltimore Sun. Michael Maurice Johnson, 29, of Baltimore, who had dated Barnes' half-sister Deena for several years, was indicted on a first-degree murder charge in April. He was reportedly the last person said to have seen Barnes alive. The 16-year-old Barnes, a student from Monroe, NC, was visiting her half-sister in northwest Baltimore when she went missing Dec. 28, 2010. Several search parties attempted to locate the teen, who was said to be an honor student. Workers at the Conowingo Dam discovered her body on April 20, 2011, and authorities identified the …

Lawyers say the 16-year-old honor student was shown "intoxicated" in a video with her accused killer, according to news reports.
Prosecutors in the case against the accused killer of Phylicia Barnes will show a video at trial depicting the teenage victim “intoxicated and engaging in sexual relations” with her accused killer and others, the Baltimore Sun reports. Barnes, a 16-year-old from North Carolina, went missing from Baltimore three days after Christmas 2010, while she was in Baltimore visiting her half-sister. Barnes’s body was found in the Susquehanna River in April 2011. The search for Barnes spread out across Maryland, reaching Howard County in the spring of 2011. During a Maryland State Police-led search of the Patapsco Valley State Park on April 9, police did not find Barnes, but they did find a body, later identified as John H. Hagegeorge, 55, of …

Maryland State Police took over investigation of a body found at Patapsco State Park, but search for missing teen turned up nothing.
Maryland State Police announced Saturday afternoon that the body of an unidentified man was found at Patapsco State Park during a massive search for Phylicia Barnes, a teenage girl missing from the Baltimore area since December. Police said foul play is not suspected but an investigation will continue as the body is transported for identification and autopsy. The man was wearing “multiple layers of clothing” and his body was partially decayed, according to police. The Barnes search, however, did not result in any relevant findings, according to Baltimore Police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, who spoke to reporters near Patapsco State Park. “We are working around the clock… to try and bring some closure to this,” Guglielmi said. Police …
Police, FBI agents, volunteers and dogs searched for Phylicia Barnes, a North Carolina teen who went missing from the Baltimore area in December.
As reported in the Baltimore Sun, hundreds of police officers and volunteers this morning started the second search effort for Phylicia Barnes, who went missing in December after visiting a relative in Baltimore, at Patapsco Valley State Park. Investigators have said they do not have any reliable tips that provide a particular location for the girl’s whereabouts, but have “actionable intelligence” which led them to the park. The Sun reports the search started near Ilchester Road, south of Ellicott City and Catonsville, because investigators "identified this as an area of interest. It was associated with one of the people of interest we talked to, one of the 30 people who last saw Phylicia." An initial search in the area occurred earlier in…
